The BMW Group is advancing development of the all-electric iX4 coupe SUV planned for 2026 or early 2027. The model will become the second coupe-style electric SUV in the company’s lineup after the iX2 and will sit alongside the iX3 in the compact EV segment.

The iX4 is internally coded NA7 and is being developed on the automaker’s Neue Klasse design language. The fastback SUV is positioned as the successor in form to the discontinued gasoline-powered X4, which ended production after two generations between 2014 and 2025.

The vehicle adopts BMW’s newest design language, including narrowed vertical kidney grilles, slim LED lighting, and smoother surfacing than the current G02 X4. Based on The Drive’s spy photos, the silhouette closely resembles a raised version of the i4 Gran Coupe, contributing to speculation that BMW has delayed a next-generation i4 due to overlapping design roles.

Prototypes tested in Munich show production-grade lighting and body panels beneath light camouflage. The sharply angled roofline distinguishes the iX4 from the more upright iX3 and is expected to improve aerodynamic efficiency. The iX3 has a drag coefficient of 0.24, and early assessments suggest the iX4 will fall below that level, improving range slightly compared with its sibling model.

Pricing for the iX4 is expected to exceed the iX3. In China, the 2024 iX3 carries an official price of 405,000–445,000 CNY (c. $57,100–$62,700), while actual transaction prices tracked by Yiche show significant retail discounts, with market lows of 230,000 CNY (c. $32,400) for bare-vehicle deals and 266,500–293,000 CNY (c. $37,600–$41,300) for regular transactions.

In Europe, the iX3 starts at €72,700. The iX4 will sit above the iX3 and below the X5 in showrooms, indicating a higher base price but continued market segmentation by region.

Technical specifications are expected to align with the next-generation iX3. The iX4 will reportedly share the dual-motor xDrive 50 configuration producing 470 horsepower. The vehicle uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and a usable battery capacity of 108.7 kWh.

Charging capability is expected to enable up to 231 miles (372 km) of added range in 10 minutes using a 350-kW DC charger. Market expectations suggest a driving range above 300 miles (483 km) and potentially approaching 400 miles (644 km) depending on regional certification cycles.

Models anticipated for launch include the 40 xDrive, 50 xDrive, and M60 xDrive. The full M-division variant is under consideration following the recent appearance of an iX3 M prototype, which shares development links with the upcoming electric M3.

The iX4’s core dimensions and seating configuration have not been disclosed, but the coupe-style roofline is expected to reduce rear headroom and cargo capacity compared with the iX3. The vehicle is expected to retain the same structural layout, wheelbase class, software architecture, and intelligent systems as the iX3, including the same chassis and electronics package.

BMW is also preparing the next-generation X5 using the same Neue Klasse design language, aligning its combustion, hybrid, and electric portfolios into a shared visual framework.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 7.094 CNY as of November 14, 2025.
