BYD's new patent reveals next-gen compact, modular cooling plates design

Chinese automaker BYD has applied for a new patent covering an advanced cooling plate structure designed to improve thermal management in battery packs, according to filings with China’s National Intellectual Property Administration.

The patent, titled "Cooling Plate Structure, Cooling Plate Assembly, Battery Pack, and Electric Equipment," (publication number CN 119764688 A) was submitted in October 2024.

The design features multiple cooling plates positioned to target the pole regions of battery modules, optimizing heat dissipation across critical areas.

BYD’s solution addresses two key challenges in battery thermal management: uneven cooling and space efficiency.

The segmented cooling plates not only regulate temperatures at the terminals but also cool inter-cell connectors, improving overall heat exchange performance.

The compact, modular design enhances structural rigidity while minimizing assembly footprint.
