In China, new energy large-size SUVs remain one of the few high-end segments with a reasonable level of competition. This is an SUV category that Chinese families have come to love for its space enabled by body dimensions of over 5.2 meters long and a generous 3.1 meter wheelbase. Large-size SUVs typically come in 6 or 7-seaters, ideal for families with children and elderly.

This segment has, for the past months, been dominated by Huawei and Seres' AITO M9 and Li Auto L9. Both vehicles offer extended-range models that render long distances anxiety free, while the M9 also features a pure electric version that is significantly less popular than its EREV sibling.

The AITO M9 EREV version starts at CNY 469,800 with 225 km of pure electric range and the top trim is priced at CNY 549,800. The M9 EV raises that price to CNY 509,800 - 569,800. In total, the M9 comes in 4 EREV and 2 EV configurations. On the other hand, the AITO L9 only offers Pro and Ultra versions, priced between CNY 409,800 - 439,800.

While this segment is certainly not a low-hanging fruit, nor is BYD taking a "blue ocean" strategy by entering this market space, we understand the appeal of competing against the M9 and L9 that have cumulatively sold over 20,000 large-size SUVs in China every month.

To compete with AITO and Li Auto, BYD is expected to launch the Denza N9, the third SUV of the brand, following the N7 and N8. The N7 starts at CNY 239,800, while the N8 is priced at CNY 319,800. The Denza N9 is expected to compete in the CNY 400,000 price range.

Denza is most recognized for its best-selling pure electric and plug-in hybrid minivan (MPV), the Denza D9. Denza also released the Z9 GT in April 2024, a flagship station wagon positioned as the "Chinese Panamera".

According to spy photos, the Denza N9 is expected to measure no less than 5.2 meters with a wheelbase in excess of 3 meters. The tail lights, based on spy photos and online renders, suggest a similar design language to the Z9 GT. The rear design also hints at hidden wipers, consistent with the high-end positioning.

Interior spy photos reveal a four-spoke flat bottom steering wheel, a rectangular dashboard, and a large horizontal central infotainment screen, as well as a front passenger screen. The N9 adopts a three-row seat layout with a very large panoramic roof, partitioned in the middle for what it looks to be like a ceiling mounted TV screen.

In May 2024, BYD launched the 5th generation DM hybrid technology that enables fuel consumption as low as 2.9L per 100 km and a combined range of 2,100 km. DM stands for Dual Mode for its hybrid technology, and comes in two monikers, either DM-i for fuel efficiency and affordability or DM-p for performance. The Denza N9 is expected to come with the DM-p 5.0 technology.
