Chery to break past 5 million total exports, first Chinese automaker to do it

At the inaugural Hong Kong International Auto and Supply Chain Expo, Chery Automobile’s Chairman Yin Tongyue announced that the company will become the first Chinese automaker to export over 5 million vehicles by around June 20.

The announcement was made during Chery's debut at the Hong Kong Auto Expo, signaling its official entry into the Hong Kong market.

Yin Tongyue revealed that Chery had already submitted its listing application to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in February 2025, with plans to establish Hong Kong as its global financial center, logistics hub, and innovation base. There's even potential for a local manufacturing center, further solidifying Chery's global footprint.

Chery's impressive growth trajectory leading up to this milestone is evident in its recent sales figures. From January to May 2025, the Chery Group cumulatively sold 1,026,517 vehicles, marking a 14% year-on-year increase and achieving its fastest-ever pace to reach one million sales within a year. Note that this figure includes Chery and its sub-brands (i.e. Jetour, Exeed, iCAR, Luxeed).

On a standalone basis, the Chery brand sells best in global markets, having sold over 70,000 cars in May alone. Considering that it sold less than 10,000 units monthly at the beginning of 2020, Chery has been incredibly successful outside of China.

Exports played a crucial role, with 443,940 vehicles shipped overseas during this period, maintaining Chery's position as China's top auto exporter. On average, a Chery vehicle is exported every 29 seconds.

New energy vehicles are a significant driver of this success, with 287,798 units sold cumulatively from January to May, representing a remarkable 111.5% year-on-year growth.

In May alone, the group sold 205,732 vehicles, a 9.1% increase year-on-year, with new energy vehicle sales soaring by 47.7% to 63,169 units, and exports reaching 100,737 units, up 7.7%.

At the Hong Kong expo, Chery presented a comprehensive display of its vehicle lineup, featuring 12 new energy models from its five domestic brands—Chery, Exeed, Jetour, iCAR, and Luxeed—as well as its two global brands, OMODA & JAECOO and Jetour International.

The showcased vehicles, including the Fengyun A9L, Fengyun T11, Exeed ET, and Horizone G700, demonstrated the company's commitment to meeting diverse needs, from urban commuting to off-road exploration.

The 2025 International Automobile and Supply Chain Expo, co-organized by five major institutions, including the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, attracted over a hundred global enterprises under the theme "New Automotive Era, New Journey."

The high-profile participation of Chery and ten other mainland Chinese automakers at the event signifies a strategic shift in the Chinese automotive industry, moving beyond simply "going out" to a deeper "globalization."

With Hong Kong acting as a crucial "super-connector," the city is poised to play a vital role in facilitating the internationalization of China's automotive supply chain.

As of the end of May, Chery Group reached over 16.7 million global users, with its overseas user base exceeding 4.94 million, solidifying its standing as a major player on the international automotive stage.
