Confirmed: Tesla will upgrade Model S/X later this year

On February 25, Tesla's VP of Automotive Engineering, Lars Moravy, confirmed on the "Ride the Lightning" podcast that there are no plans to discontinue the production of the Model S and Model X.

He assured that upgrades similar to those implemented in the Model 3 and Model Y are planned for later this year.

Lars comments thereby refutes previous speculations about the status of these models in Tesla's product lineup, especially since they, along with the Cybertruck, accounted for only 23,000 deliveries globally in Q4 last year.

Moravy emphasized that both models have unique advantages in scenarios involving autonomous driving and robotaxis, with the Model S offering overall quality and the Model X providing ample interior space.

TESLA MODEL X MONTHLY REGISTRATIONS IN CHINA

In China, both the Model X and S are not manufactured at the Shanghai Gigafactory, unlike the mass-market models 3/Y.

In 2024, the Model X sold only 1,587 units according to insurance registrations, with its single best month in March with 321 units delivered. In January 2025, Tesla China sold 42 Model X.

This is understandable as the X is priced between 724,900 CNY and 824,900 CNY, almost three-times the price of the new Model Y starting at 249,900 CNY.

Despite its low sales volume, the Model X, even before the Model Y, led the popularization of fastback SUVs after it was unveiled in February 2012 and first delivered in September 2015.

The X continues to be an industry benchmark. For example, Li Auto released official images of its upcoming fully electric SUV, the Li Auto i8, next to a Model X on February 26.

TESLA MODEL S MONTHLY REGISTRATIONS IN CHINA

The Tesla Model S, priced between 684,900 CNY to 814,900 CNY, sells even less in China, with only 321 units sold in 2024 according to insurance registrations.

Combined, the Model X/S sold less than 2,000 units in 2024.
