Leapmotor D19 launches with world's largest EREV battery starting at $32,000

Leapmotor (HKG: 9863) opened sales of the D19 full-size SUV in China on April 16, 2026, pricing seven variants between 219,800 CNY (c. $32,200) and 269,800 CNY (c. $39,600) with deliveries commencing simultaneously for pre-order customers.

The launch is the clearest signal yet of Leapmotor's push upmarket. Built on the new LEAP 4.0 platform, the D19 targets the 250,000-CNY premium SUV segment and competes with the ONVO L90 and Geely Galaxy M9 — a category where Leapmotor has not previously competed. The model is available in both six- and seven-seat configurations, and with both EREV and BEV powertrains to broaden its appeal across family buyers.

The EREV variants carry an 80.3 kWh battery pack supplied by CATL — which Leapmotor claims is the largest ever fitted to a range-extended electric vehicle. A 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine from Horse Powertrain produces 95 kW (127 hp) as a range extender, with the exhaust system routed through the door sills to free up underbody space for the battery.

The EREV uses Leapmotor's cell-to-chassis (CTC) integration, combining battery cells directly with the vehicle structure to improve rigidity and space efficiency. On the 800-volt architecture, the EREV charges from 30% to 80% in 15 minutes and delivers a CLTC pure-electric range of up to 500 km (311 miles), with a 40-litre fuel tank extending total range further. All EREV variants run a dual-motor AWD system producing 400 kW (536 hp) and 7,850 N·m of wheel-end torque.

BEV variants step up to a 115 kWh CATL battery on a 1,000-volt platform, achieving a CLTC range of 720 km (447 miles). Leapmotor states that 15 minutes of charging can restore more than 350 km (217 miles) of range. The top BEV trim deploys three motors for a combined output of 540 kW (724 hp) and a 0–100 km/h time of 3.94 seconds.

Leapmotor D19 specs (Leapmotor)

Across most trim levels, the D19 is equipped with dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chips delivering 1,280 TOPS of computing power, 28 sensing components including one LiDAR unit, dual-chamber air suspension with CDC damping control, and an in-cabin oxygen system designed to function at altitudes up to 4,500 metres. The D19 measures 5,252 mm long, 1,995 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall on a 3,110 mm wheelbase.

Leapmotor enters the premium segment from a position of momentum. The company delivered 110,155 vehicles in Q1 2026, up 25.82% year-on-year, including 50,029 units in March — a 34.87% increase from March 2025. The company ranked first among NEV start-ups for both the month and the quarter, and has set a full-year 2026 target of one million deliveries.

International availability is planned under Leapmotor's partnership with Stellantis (NYSE: STLA), which gives the brand a presence in more than 40 markets across four continents through a global network of approximately 1,700 sales and service points.

How consumers in the premium segment respond to a Leapmotor competing on technology density rather than brand heritage will be the defining test of the D19's commercial life.
