SAIC Motor has begun pre-sales of the new MG 4 EV in China, unveiling a redesigned compact hatch that positions the model for renewed performance and broader market reach.
Pre-sales opened on August 5, with prices starting at 73,800 yuan (c. $10,100). Four variants are available: the Comfort, Ease, and Freedom trims—all offering a CLTC-tested range of 437 km (c. 272 miles)—and the range-topping Smart trim, which provides 530 km (c. 330 miles) per charge.

The updated MG 4 EV features a larger footprint compared to its predecessor. It measures 4,395 mm long, 1,842 mm wide, and 1,551 mm tall, with a 2,750 mm wheelbase—up slightly in all dimensions.
This relaunch is part of SAIC Motor’s strategy to enhance the MG brand's domestic presence. The initial MG 4 EV recorded modest sales in China but achieved significant success in Europe.

The new iteration, with enhanced features at a competitive price, signals a push to reclaim relevance in the compact EV hatchback segment.
Technically, the MG 4 EV runs on SAIC’s E3 platform and is powered by a single rear-mounted permanent-magnet motor producing 120 kW and 250 Nm of torque, delivering a top speed of 160 km/h.

Its technology offerings include an MG×Oppo Smart Mobility System, running on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8155 chip, and a floating 15.6-inch 2.5K touchscreen.
The system supports smartphone app integration, AI voice control, gesture navigation, over-the-air updates, and remote functions such as digital key and parking.

Battery options include two lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) packs—42.8 kWh and 53.9 kWh—offering CLTC ranges of 437 km (c. 272 miles) and 530 km (c. 330 miles), respectively.
The vehicle supports DC fast charging from 30% to 80% in roughly 20 minutes, and its heat-pump thermal management helps preserve up to 75% of range in cold conditions.

The semi-solid-state battery variant is notable for its enhanced safety features. SAIC reports it has passed a three-direction needle penetration test without smoke and performs reliably in low-temperature conditions.
The battery structure uses an aluminium-rare-earth alloy incorporating lanthanum and cerium, an investment valued at around 500 million yuan (c. $68.4m).

Structurally, the MG 4 EV employs cell-to-body (CTB) integration for its battery, improving rigidity and interior packaging.
It achieves a torsional stiffness of 31,000 Nm/deg, and the battery meets IP67/IP69K water-resistance standards. SAIC offers a lifetime warranty on the powertrain.

Inside, the vehicle delivers enhanced comfort with integrated heated and ventilated seats, EU-compliant synthetic leather upholstery, 30 storage compartments, and a panoramic sunroof. Luggage capacity is generous—with 471 L when upright and up to 1,362 L folded, including a hidden 98 L compartment.
The strategic launch and pricing effort suggests SAIC aims to broaden MG's appeal in China by offering advanced technology, safety, and range in an extremely affordable package.
This may appeal to buyers considering rivals like the VW ID.3, BYD Dolphin, or Nio’s Firefly EV.
