On September 4th, BYD officially revealed the exterior design of its latest compact SUV, the Sealion 05 DM-i, via a 25-second video on Weibo.
As the newest member of BYD's Ocean series, the Sealion 05 DM-i will feature a sporty design with a hybrid engine. The DM-i moniker stands for Dual Mode-intelligent, an efficient plug-in hybrid system.
The Sealion 05 DM-i dimensions are similar to its Dynasty siblings Song PLUS and Song Pro, both of which are amongst the best-selling BYD SUVs.
Positioned as an Ocean model, the Sealion 05 will further target the younger demographics, likely at a lower price point.

Destroyer 05 Design Language
The Sealion 05 DM-i adopts BYD’s signature design language, similar to the Destroyer 05.
The front features a large, borderless grille with horizontal chrome slats that produce a layered, "boundless" effect.
This design is complemented by waterdrop-shaped accents and crisscrossing trim, giving it a modern look.

At the center of the grille, the bold "BYD" logo adds a distinct brand presence. The full-LED headlights, sharp and elongated, enhance the vehicle's aggressive stance, with the inverted L-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs) being particularly eye-catching.
Both the high and low beams come with lenses, improving visibility and driving safety.
Additionally, a black trim strip connects the headlights and grille, unifying the front design.
Floating Roof Side Profile
From the side, the Sealion 05 DM-i adopts a floating roof design, with the B, C, and D pillars in black, creating a sleek, sporty aesthetic.
The sharp shoulder line runs across the body, balancing strength with smooth elegance.
Traditional door handles are retained for practical use, offering an easier and more familiar experience compared to hidden handles.
In terms of size, the vehicle measures 4,710mm in length, 1,880mm in width, and 1,720mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,712mm.
These dimensions are similar to models like the Song Pro DM-i, ensuring a spacious and comfortable interior for daily commutes or family trips.
Modern Tail with Crossover Inspiration
The rear of the Sealion 05 DM-i stands out with a full-width taillight design. The taillights feature smoked elements, while the integrated high-mounted brake light within the rear spoiler adds both function and style.
The lower rear section is accented by large black and silver trims, enhancing the visual depth and layering of the rear design.
The rear bumper adopts a crossover-inspired design, with the license plate placed on the tailgate. This combination of sportiness and practicality are key elements of BYD's Ocean series.
5th-Generation DM Technology
The Sealion 05 DM-i is powered by BYD's latest fifth-generation DM-i hybrid technology. The system combines a 1.5L engine with an electric motor.
The gasoline engine delivers a maximum power of 74kW, while the electric motor generates up to 120kW.
Some configurations may offer a 160kW motor option, allowing the vehicle to cater to a variety of customer preferences.
Additionally, the Sealion 05 DM-i is equipped with BYD's proprietary LFP Blade Battery, which should deliver excellent range and efficiency.
