NIO ES9 set for May 27 launch with pre-orders exceeding 50,000 units

NIO Inc (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866) will officially launch and begin delivering its flagship ES9 SUV on May 27, 2026 — four days ahead of the June 1 target previously indicated by management.

The company has prepared a large batch of vehicles in advance of the launch event, and pre-orders have surpassed 50,000 units, according to industry sources. With ample inventory available from day one, buyers are not expected to face the multi-week waits that typically accompany new model launches in the Chinese EV market.

Pre-sales opened April 9, 2026, at pricing that landed well below analyst expectations. The entry-level Executive Luxury starts at 528,000 CNY (c. $77,600) with battery included, or 420,000 CNY (c. $61,800) under NIO's Battery-as-a-Service subscription — below the 500,000 CNY floor most analysts had anticipated.

The Executive Signature trim, which adds the SkyRide active suspension system, starts at 588,000 CNY (c. $86,500) or 480,000 CNY (c. $70,600) with BaaS. The range-topping Horizon Special Edition opens at 658,000 CNY (c. $96,800), or 550,000 CNY (c. $80,900) with BaaS.

CEO and founder William Li said on May 21 that pre-orders had accelerated sharply in the ten days leading up to NIO's Q1 2026 earnings call, with orders from buyers outside the existing NIO user base running at more than 1.5 times the equivalent pace seen after last year's ES8 launch. Li views the ES9, alongside the Onvo L80, as NIO's primary lever to drive a delivery recovery through the second quarter.

The ES9 sits on NIO's NT 3.0 platform — shared with the ET9 executive sedan and the third-generation ES8. At 5,365 mm long on a 3,250 mm wheelbase, it is China's largest mass-produced battery electric SUV. A dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain delivers 520 kW (697 hp) and 700 Nm of torque, covering 0–100 km/h in 4.3 seconds.

The 102 kWh CATL ternary lithium-ion pack operates on a 900V high-voltage architecture, offering CLTC-rated ranges of 580, 600, or 620 km (360, 373, or 385 miles) depending on wheel and trim configuration. NIO's 600 kW hyperchargers can replenish roughly 255 km (158 miles) in five minutes; a battery swap at one of more than 2,500 NIO stations across China takes approximately three minutes.

The ES9 carries over the ET9's complete technology suite, including steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering, and — on Signature and above trims — the SkyRide fully active air suspension. Three lidar sensors feed NIO's in-house 5-nanometer Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip. The cabin features a 15.6-inch AMOLED center display for the front row and two 14.5-inch NIO Link screens for rear passengers. Standard seating is six, with a seven-seat configuration available.

The ES9 targets domestic rivals including the AITO M9 and Zeekr 9X, while also seeking to pull buyers from combustion flagships such as the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. Deutsche Bank lifted its full-year 2026 NIO delivery forecast by roughly 5% to approximately 420,000 units following the ES9 pre-sales announcement, citing the model as a key catalyst. NIO's CEO has maintained a 40–50% delivery growth target for the full year.

Whether the ES9 can sustain its pre-order momentum and close the gap with the segment-leading AITO M9 once deliveries ramp through the second half of 2026 will be the defining question for NIO's annual performance.
