NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866) officially launched its Firefly compact electric hatchback in Thailand on March 24, 2026, setting a retail price of 799,000 THB (c. $24,500) at the 47th Bangkok International Motor Show — the brand's second right-hand drive market after Singapore.

The model is sold as a fully imported CBU unit through Thonburi BlueSky, a newly formed subsidiary of Thonburi Group, the Thai conglomerate that has served as the contract manufacturer and distributor for Mercedes-Benz in Southeast Asia for nearly seven decades. The distribution agreement was signed in Shanghai on October 24, 2025, by NIO founder and CEO William Li.

Each purchase is accompanied by a four-year/100,000 km vehicle warranty and an eight-year/160,000 km battery warranty, consistent with the terms Firefly offers in other overseas markets.

The Bangkok show runs from March 25 to April 5, 2026, at IMPACT Challenger Halls 1–3, Muang Thong Thani, and features more than 10 new model launches from brands including BYD, Changan, GWM, and Tesla — a sign of how competitive Thailand's EV segment has become.

The Firefly is built on NIO's FT1 platform and measures 4,003 mm long, 1,781 mm wide and 1,557 mm tall, with a 2,615 mm wheelbase — placing it marginally wider and longer than a MINI Aceman. A single rear-mounted electric motor produces 105 kW (143 PS) and 200 Nm of torque, with a 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) time of 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph).

Power comes from a 42.1 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery that delivers 330 km (205 miles) of WLTP-rated range. The car supports DC fast charging at up to 100 kW, with a 10–80% charge in approximately 29 minutes, and AC charging at up to 11 kW via a three-phase onboard charger. Vehicle-to-load (V2L) output of up to 3.68 kW is included as standard.

The model is also designed for NIO's fifth-generation battery swap stations, though no swap infrastructure has been announced for Thailand at this stage.

Inside, the Firefly carries a 13.2-inch central touchscreen with Apple CarPlay compatibility, a 14-speaker, 7.1-channel audio system with Dolby Atmos, 256-colour ambient lighting, and a panoramic sunroof. Cargo space consists of a 335-litre boot — expandable to 1,253 litres with rear seats folded — a 29-litre under-seat storage compartment and a 29-litre frunk.

A 92-litre frunk is specified in some markets; the Thai-spec figure is confirmed at 29 litres by Electrive. The car rides on a chassis co-developed with Multimatic and achieves near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, with a turning radius of 4.7 metres.

The Firefly has earned five-star ratings in both C-NCAP and Euro NCAP testing and carries nine airbags along with a comprehensive suite of ADAS functions powered by a Horizon Robotics Journey 5 processor rated at 128 TOPS.

Thailand is the second RHD market for the Firefly after Singapore, where the brand launched in January 2026 through distributor Wearnes Automotive at a price of 169,999 SGD — a figure inflated by Singapore's Certificate of Entitlement system. In China, the same model starts from 119,800 CNY (c. $16,400), making it the most affordable vehicle in the NIO umbrella.

RHD mass production began on November 18, 2025, following the model's first public appearance at Auto Guangzhou that month. The brand had crossed 40,000 cumulative deliveries globally by January 10, 2026, with the bulk of volume coming from China, where it first went on sale on April 29, 2025.

The brand's Thai pricing of 799,000 THB positions the Firefly above entry-level Chinese EVs such as the BYD Atto 1, which is expected to be priced below 500,000 THB at the same show, and closer to the premium urban segment the brand is targeting. Daniel Jin, NIO vice president and president of Firefly, described Thailand as "the most dynamic and strategically important market in Southeast Asia."

The Thai rollout is part of a deliberate strategy to expand into tariff-free RHD territories. The European Commission imposed additional import duties on Chinese-made EVs in late 2024, which raised Firefly's planned pricing in that region and redirected near-term commercial attention toward Southeast Asia, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

Firefly is also a finalist for the 2026 World Urban Car award, alongside the Baojun Yep Plus and the Hyundai Venue, with the winner to be announced at the New York International Auto Show on April 1. NIO also plans to launch its core NIO-branded vehicles and the Onvo brand in Thailand later this year through the same Thonburi BlueSky distribution network.

How Thailand's buyers respond to a Chinese-built premium supermini — at a price point no Chinese EV has previously attempted in this market — will tell the industry something important about whether brand positioning can travel as easily as the car itself.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 32.60 THB as of March 24, 2026
