NIO's 4,000th swap station and first 5th-gen version will be its biggest structural change

NIO Inc (NYSE: NIO) will bring its first fifth-generation battery swap station online on August 7, 2026, in Quanzhou, Fujian province, a facility that will also stand as the company's 4,000th swap site in China. Ma Lin, NIO's vice president of branding and communications, revealed the timeline in a social media post over the weekend.

NIO has built its brand around battery swapping as an alternative to fast charging, a strategy few competitors have replicated at scale, and the new station represents the biggest structural change to that network since it launched. The station will run on a rebuilt fifth-generation swap architecture built to accommodate a far wider range of vehicle wheelbases than earlier generations. The flagship ES9 SUV, at 5.3 meters (17.4 feet) long, and the compact Firefly hatchback, at just 4.003 meters (13.1 feet), will be able to use the same swap mechanism for the first time.

Firefly models previously could not use NIO's existing stations because their shorter wheelbase did not fit the mechanism, forcing the sub-brand to rely on separate charging infrastructure. Once fifth-generation sites go live nationwide, NIO, Onvo and Firefly will share a single swap network for the first time.

NIO first outlined the fifth-generation rollout in March 2026, when it said it would activate internal test stations by the end of that month, open five to 10 pioneer sites to users between May and June, and begin large-scale construction around July or August. The company began internal testing of pioneer fifth-generation stations in late June across six cities, including Shanghai, Beijing, Hefei, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Kunshan, and has said large-scale deployment will formally begin in the third quarter of 2026.

As of August 3, 2026, NIO operates 9,149 charging and swap stations nationwide, including 3,994 swap stations and 5,155 charging stations backed by 29,781 proprietary charging piles. The network has completed more than 110 million battery swaps to date. NIO Power also signed an agreement in June 2026 with Zhongan Energy to jointly build 500 additional swap stations within a year, a sign the company is leaning more heavily on partnerships to hit its target of adding over 1,000 swap stations in China this year after slowing its own construction pace over the past two years to preserve capital.

The infrastructure push comes as NIO's three brands post record momentum. The company delivered 35,934 vehicles in July 2026, up 71.0% year-on-year, with the NIO brand delivering 20,008 units (up 57.9%), Onvo 10,155 units (up 69.9%) and Firefly 5,771 units (up 143.9%). The NIO-branded ES8 alone topped 10,000 monthly deliveries for a second straight month in July. Year-to-date deliveries through July reached 227,057 vehicles, up 68.0% year-on-year, with all three brands setting new seven-month highs.

The same Weibo post carried a second data point beyond the station timeline: Ma said the NIO brand's average selling price in July 2026 reached 434,600 CNY (c. $64,400), which he credited to continued strong demand for the ES8 and the newly launched ES9. Ma had teased both figures a day earlier in a follow-up guessing game, offering NIO Credits to the first three followers who correctly predicted the average selling price and the Quanzhou station's opening date, before confirming the results in the post.

A shared swap network across NIO's full brand lineup removes one of the biggest practical barriers to Firefly and Onvo owners adopting battery swapping, and could strengthen NIO Power's case as it leans on third-party builders to hit its station targets. Whether Quanzhou's launch triggers the promised third-quarter wave of new fifth-generation sites is the next thing to watch.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.7520 CNY as of August 3, 2026.
