On April 21, NIO’s second sub-brand Onvo released details of its upcoming three-row SUV called the L90, which will debut on April 23 at the Shanghai Auto Show in Hall 6.2, Booth 6B03. The event will end on May 2, 2025.
While the company has yet announced an official pricing, the Telescope estimates that the L90 will come at roughly the same price of a Tesla Model Y (c. 265,000 RMB).

Just 4 days ago, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) released official images of the L90 in its latest vehicle catalog, attracting lots of critics on the vehicle’s front design.

Onvo released new promotional photos of the L90, including the front, profile, and side angles of the SUV, which undoubtedly look better than MIIT catalog photos.

Today’s release brought to light some more important details; the L90 has one of the largest front trunk (frunk) in any production EV with 240L capacity, For reference, the Tesla Model Y frunk measures 117L.
The frunk has a 830 mm opening width and 600 mm ground clearance with double-tap (or double-knock) electric opening.

The frunk is undeniably a unique selling point that Onvo wants to highlight. Its 240L of capacity can fit two 20-inch suitcases and a child’s luggage with fair ease.

Its wide opening enables sliding in a 30-inch suitcase and its loading height is lower than a typical sedan’s trunk, making loading belongings easy for the whole family.
Onvo says that not all front trunks deserve to be considered as a “front cabin”, but this one certainly does.

Onvo stresses that most front trunk are underutilized due to cumbersome or impractical opening mechanisms (i.e. pulling a lever from the driver seat).
The team believes that the L90 will address all pain-points related to frunks, with its patented “Happy Tap” system, requiring two gentle touches (or double-knocks) to open the fully-electric frunk.

The Onvo L90 will feature 21” wheels with 790 mm ultra-large tires to create that “flagship” vehicle presence.
The three-row SUV also uses titanium satin accents across the vehicle, including the upper frame of the side windows through the A-pillar to the C-pillar.

The massive SUV will measure 5,145 mm in length, 1,998 mm in width, and 1,766 mm in height with a 3,110 mm wheelbase.
The rear-wheel drive version will weigh 2,250 kg with a 85 kWh battery. Note that the long-range version Onvo L60 features the same battery size and can achieve 730 km in CLTC range.
Moreover, the 85 kWh Onvo L60 starts at 235,900 RMB for the rear-wheel drive version.
The L60 RWD is a more than capable car with 340 kW in motor power, the same as the flagship NIO ET9 sedan. The AWD adds 100 kW of front motor power, like the Onvo L60’s, for a total of 440 kW (590 horsepower).

Onvo highlights that the L90 is the fruit of 3 years of dedicated development, inspired by users and built with purpose, drawing from NIO’s decade long EV experience.
The new brand also promises that the surprise (240L frunk) does not end there, as “Bigger and Better” is just the beginning.
