SAIC-General Motors becomes first Joint Venture to integrate DeepSeek-R1 to cars

On February 11, SAIC General Motors (SAIC-GM), a joint venture between SAIC Motor and General Motors, announced the integration of the DeepSeek-R1 reasoning model into its vehicle lineup.
The new models under the Cadillac and Buick brands will soon feature this integration.

Established in 1997, SAIC-GM is one of China's many automotive joint ventures, producing and selling foreign branded vehicles such as the Cadillac, Buick, and Chevrolet.
According to the company, SAIC-GM has developed a "cloud-edge integrated AI model hub" with modular plug-and-play capabilities, enabling the integration of various cutting-edge AI models.

This AI hub supports the collaborative evolution of dual AI models, combining DeepSeek's advanced reasoning capabilities with the creative generation abilities of Baidus’s large language model, ERNIE (Wenxin Yiyan).
Both models enable deeper understanding of complex user commands while offering interactive features such as content retrieval and generative content creation.
For example, the system can interpret nuanced voice instructions, provide real-time information, and even generate creative responses or suggestions for users.

SAIC-GM stated that, with the support of this AI model hub, its future intelligent cabins will transcend the boundaries of "perception, reasoning, thinking, and interaction."
The goal is to transform vehicles from mere "transportation tools" into "lifelike intelligent entities," redefining smart mobility with AI.
This will provide consumers with more natural interactions, proactive services, and richer scenario-based experiences.

Several major automakers have either already integrated or is planning to integrate DeepSeek, including BYD, Geely, Zeekr, Dongfeng, Voyah, and Great Wall Motors.
Its applications span intelligent cabins, voice interaction, and vehicle control system optimization, among other areas.
