Tesla readies budget Model 3 for China starting at below $30k with 480 km range

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) is moving closer to launching an entry-level Model 3 variant in China after the vehicle appeared in official government filings in January 2026, with production lines at Gigafactory Shanghai reportedly already built and a retail price widely expected to fall below 200,000 CNY (c. $29,000).

The new variant was listed in China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology tax-exemption catalogue on January 13, 2026, under the name "Model 3 Standard Range Upgraded Version." It is positioned below the current entry-level rear-wheel-drive Model 3, which retails at 235,500 CNY (c. $34,200) with a CLTC range of 634 km (394 miles).

The filing confirms a 52.9 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery paired with a single rear-mounted motor. CLTC-rated range is 480 km (298 miles), a reduction of roughly 24% from the existing base model. Zero-to-100 km/h acceleration is approximately 6.2 seconds, about one second slower than the current long-range rear-wheel-drive variant.

To reach the lower price, Tesla has stripped out approximately 20 features relative to the current lineup. Confirmed deletions from overseas versions include fabric rather than leather seats, no seat ventilation, no interior ambient lighting, no rear passenger entertainment screen, single-layer rather than laminated glass, a reduced speaker count, and manual rather than power-folding exterior mirrors. The core safety architecture, Autopilot Basic, central touchscreen, and over-the-air update capability remain unchanged.

The variant follows a pattern Tesla has already executed elsewhere. In October 2025, Tesla launched Standard versions of both the Model 3 and Model Y in North America at $36,990 and $39,990 respectively, priced roughly $5,000–$5,500 below prior base models by eliminating or simplifying more than 20 features. The Standard Model Y followed on European websites within days.

China was the last major market without a simplified variant — until now. Tesla Korea launched the Model 3 Standard RWD in January 2026 at 41.99 million won (approximately 198,000 CNY / c. $28,700), with post-subsidy pricing falling below 174,000 CNY. All units are manufactured at Gigafactory Shanghai, which exports to Korea and other Asian markets, lending weight to the assumption that Chinese domestic pricing — stripped of logistics costs — could go lower still.

Chinese outlets report that dedicated production lines at Gigafactory Shanghai are operational, though Tesla has made no official announcement. Tesla's timing is notable given recent momentum at its Shanghai factory.

Retail sales in China reached 38,206 vehicles in February 2026, up 42.68% year-on-year, pushing Tesla's share of China's battery electric vehicle market to 13.74% — the highest since April 2024, according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA). Combined January and February output from Shanghai rose more than 35% to 127,728 units, though the figures are partially flattered by a weak comparable period a year earlier.

The Model 3's February retail performance placed it ninth in China's overall passenger EV sales ranking, a meaningful step up from its 2025 average standing. Whether the sedan can sustain that position once the sub-200,000 CNY segment fills with well-equipped domestic alternatives will be the harder question to answer.

Conversion rate: 1 USD = 6.89 CNY as of March 25, 2026
