Tesla successfully registered a trademark for the CYBERTRUCK in China

Tesla has successfully registered the Chinese trademark “特斯拉赛博“, which translates to "Tesla Cyber".

The trademark application was submitted on February 26 of last year and was under “official review” on October 20, 2024.

Though the trademark was officially approved on January 21, 2025, local media outlets only picked up the news recently.

The application for this trademark was classified under transportation and follows the previous registration made for the English name "CYBERTRUCK", which was submitted in May 18, 2021 and approved on July 21, 2022.

The CYBERTRUCK has attracted plenty of interest globally since its reveal in November 21, 2019 as a concept vehicle.

On December 11 of last year, Tesla CYBERTRUCK received an official Automobile Energy Consumption Label from China's MIIT, listing it as an M1 vehicle (passenger vehicle).

The MIIT assessment showed the CYBERTRUCK's energy consumption is 22.6 kW per 100 kilometers with a range of 618 km, and a CYBERTRUCK was spotted with a green license plate in Tianjin, China.

However, the car hasn’t landed in the Chinese market for many reasons, largely due to regulatory restrictions.

According to China’s implementation of GB 24550-2023, a pedestrian collision safety standard, there must be no sharp protrusions inside or outside of the vehicle that may cause injury.

With the sharp edges and angles of the stainless steel CYBERTRUCK, there is unfortunately a clear risk to pedestrian safety.

At the same time, the design of the CYBERTRUCK also do not meet safety standards of the Chinese C-NCAP and the China Insurance Research Institute.

C-NCAP stands for China New Car Assessment Program and is an independent automotive safety testing organization that evaluates the safety performance of new vehicles sold in China.

The China Insurance Research Institute focuses on reviewing insurance models, policies, and providing academic support and policy recommendations for China's insurance industry.
