The Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory will produce the Megapack, a large-scale commercial energy storage battery.

According to Tesla China, the Megapack is the world's largest electrochemical energy storage device, featuring an integrated system and modular design.

Each Megapack unit can store over 3.9 MWh of energy, enough to power 3,600 homes for one hour. A storage plant comprising over 200 Megapacks can store 1 million kWh of electricity.

The factory covers an area of approximately 200,000 square meters and represents a total investment of about 1.45 billion yuan.

On the day of the groundbreaking, Tesla also signed the first batch of Megapack orders in China with Lingang Group, totaling eight units.

The Shanghai Energy Storage Gigafactory is expected to begin mass production early this year, with an annual production capacity of 10,000 Megapack units, equating to nearly 40 GWh of storage capacity.

Launched in July 2019, the Megapack was developed to meet the needs of large-scale battery storage projects and is manufactured by Tesla Energy, the energy subsidiary of Tesla, Inc.

Megapack units are designed to stabilize the grid and prevent outages by storing energy and providing power when needed.

This eliminates the need for gas peaker plants and helps to create a cleaner, more sustainable energy infrastructure.

The Megapack is fully integrated, with each battery module paired with its own inverter for improved efficiency and safety.

It also features over-the-air software updates, ensuring continuous optimization of its functions.
