On November 12, Tesla announced that the 5 millionth battery pack has rolled off the production line at its Shanghai Gigafactory. The plant’s battery packs are used widely in core models such as the Model 3 and Model Y.
The Shanghai Gigafactory, located in the city’s Lingang New Area, covers 860,000 square meters and is Tesla’s first overseas vehicle manufacturing plant as well as China’s first wholly foreign-owned auto production facility. Production began at the end of 2019.

In August 2024, the plant produced Tesla’s 10 millionth electric drive unit. That same year, it marked the 3 millionth vehicle off the line, exported its 1 millionth car, and achieved 916,000 deliveries, accounting for roughly half of Tesla’s global output.
Tesla said it independently develops the cell chemistry and designs the battery pack structure, achieving high energy density, strong performance output, and reliable operation under extreme conditions — particularly stable discharge in low temperatures.

According to the company, the battery system’s designed lifespan exceeds that of the vehicle itself, with a cycle life longer than the car’s service life, reducing concerns over battery degradation.
Tesla added that its safety standards far surpass industry norms, with rigorous testing across every stage — from material selection and module packaging to structural protection — and multiple layers of redundancy built into its design.
