Volkswagen's second model co-developed with XPeng (NYSE: XPEV) has cleared a major regulatory hurdle in China. The ID. UNYX 09 fastback sedan appeared in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology's July 10, 2026 vehicle filing catalog, the last major procedural step before a model can go on sale in China, ahead of a planned second-half 2026 launch.

The 5-meter sedan follows the ID. UNYX 08 SUV and ID. UNYX 07 crossover, both already on sale and built on the China Electronic Architecture (CEA) that Volkswagen and XPeng developed jointly. Volkswagen Anhui, the joint venture behind the ID. UNYX lineup, first showed the 09 sedan on April 21, 2026 at Volkswagen Group's media night ahead of the Beijing auto show, where it shared the stage with the Jetta-brand JETTA X concept and the Audi E7X.

Volkswagen and XPeng's partnership began in July 2023 with a $700 million investment and an agreement to co-develop two Volkswagen-branded models on XPeng's platform and smart-driving software. The ID. UNYX 08 SUV launched on April 16, 2026 as the first of the two, priced from 229,900 CNY (c. $34,067). The ID. UNYX 09 is the second.

Filing documents put the ID. UNYX 09 at 5,081 mm long, 1,980 mm wide and 1,509–1,526 mm tall depending on trim, riding on a 3,030 mm wheelbase. Two drivetrains are listed: a rear-wheel-drive single motor producing 230 kW (308 hp) peak, and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive layout adding a 140 kW (188 hp) front motor for a combined 370 kW (496 hp). Both versions top out at 200 km/h (124 mph), with curb weights of 2,207 kg and 2,307 kg respectively.

The battery packs use lithium iron phosphate cells supplied by CATL (HKEX: 3750), assembled locally by Volkswagen Anhui Components; the MIIT filing did not disclose pack capacity. The sedan rides on the CEA architecture developed jointly by Volkswagen and XPeng, which consolidates vehicle functions into four control zones and cuts the number of electronic control units by roughly 30%.

The fastback carries over the ID. UNYX family's centerline design and gold Volkswagen badge, with split headlights, hidden door handles and a through-type taillight housing an illuminated logo. Options include 21-inch alloy wheels, Brembo brake calipers and a panoramic glass roof. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Brand China CEO Robert Cisek said on Weibo the sedan's driver-assistance and AI features "rank among the first tier," pointing to a Vision-Language-Action smart-driving system and an onboard AI assistant.

Volkswagen has not disclosed pricing for the ID. UNYX 09. For context, the ID. UNYX 08 starts at 229,900 CNY (c. $34,067), and the smaller ID. UNYX 07 crossover starts at 110,204 CNY (c. $16,327) — positioning that suggests the larger, dual-motor flagship will likely price above both when official figures arrive later this year.

Whether Volkswagen can convert a CEA-based, XPeng-tuned sedan into meaningful sales in China's crowded B-segment may depend less on the hardware than on how quickly its VLA driver-assistance system can match the local software leaders it is now competing against.
