New Tesla Model Y Launch Day Pre-Orders Exceed Monthly Sales Volume in China

Tesla China has reportedly received over 50,000 pre-orders for the new Tesla Model Y, previously codenamed Juniper, on launch day January 10 according to an automotive Weibo account @长三角行健者.

Former Tesla store manager and Chinese car blogger @胖虎Shawn also noted that most Tesla stores recorded over 100 orders in a single day, which further support the previous claim.

Customers that have placed a deposit much reportedly wait until April or May to receive their new Model Y.

However, according to Electrek, Tesla China’s Model Y configurator still estimates deliveries for March on a new order placed on January 13.

This magnitude of pre-order volume on a single day exceeds the number of Model Y sold in a regular month in China.

In fact, Tesla sold just over 480,000 Model Y in 2024, with December being the only month exceeding the 50,000 mark with 61,881 units delivered to Chinese buyers.

In early January, we also learned that the Gigafactory Shanghai production volume for the Model Y was increased to a daily output of 2,400 units, potentially as much as 750,000 annual units.

The refreshed Model Y is also more expensive, with the rear-wheel drive (standard version) and all-wheel drive (long-range) models priced at 263,500 CNY and 303,500 CNY respectively, an increase of 13,600 CNY and 12,600 CNY over the previous models.

Currently, only a select few markets will be supplied by Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai with debut in China expected to start in March.

The facelifted Model Y has not officially launched in Europe or North America yet, which could stagnate demand for the older version as many may wait to see the new one in person (I would).
