NIO Inc. (NYSE: NIO; HKG: 9866) delivered its 80,000th third-generation ES8 on Friday in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, roughly six months after the full-size electric SUV entered the market — and just 21 days after passing the 70,000-unit threshold.

The milestone arrived on the same day NIO confirmed the model had sold more than 11,260 units in February, keeping it at the top of China's large SUV segment for a third consecutive month across all powertrain types. The 70,000th unit was delivered on February 27 in Wenzhou, making the gap between the two milestones the fastest 10,000-unit run since December's production peak.

The ES8 launched on September 20, 2025 at NIO Day 2025 in Hangzhou, with customer deliveries beginning the following day. Built on the NT3.0 platform shared with the flagship ET9 sedan, the SUV marked a significant departure from its predecessor — not only in architecture but in price.

The outright purchase price starts at 406,800 CNY (c. $59,000), a reduction of roughly 27% from the second-generation model. Under NIO's Battery-as-a-Service subscription scheme, the entry price falls to 298,800 CNY (c. $43,400), with buyers paying a monthly battery rental fee separately.

The pricing shift pulled the ES8 into a wider segment and attracted buyers from outside NIO's existing customer base. At launch, NIO disclosed that 49.2% of ES8 buyers had switched from German luxury brands, with 62.4% overall transitioning from premium combustion vehicles.

The model reached 10,000 deliveries in 41 days, 20,000 in 70 days, 30,000 in 89 days, and 40,000 in 100 days — each milestone described by NIO as a segment record for pure-electric vehicles priced above 400,000 CNY.

The ES8 is powered by a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 520 kW of combined output and 700 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.97 seconds. Its 102 kWh NMC battery delivers a CLTC-rated range of 635 km (395 miles), with energy consumption rated at 16.6 kWh per 100 km.

The 900V electrical architecture supports peak charging at 600 kW — enough to add 250 km (155 miles) in five minutes — while NIO's battery swap stations can exchange a depleted pack in under three minutes. The SUV measures 5,280 mm long, 2,010 mm wide, and 1,800 mm tall on a 3,130 mm wheelbase, and is offered in six- and seven-seat configurations.

Driver assistance hardware includes three LiDAR units, a 4D imaging radar, and 31 sensors in total, with processing handled by NIO's in-house Shenji NX9031 chip running the proprietary SkyOS operating system.

The ES8's commercial momentum has been central to NIO's financial turnaround. On March 10, 2026, the company reported a GAAP operating profit of 807.3 million CNY ($117M) for the fourth quarter of 2025 — its first quarterly profit since its founding. Vehicle gross margin reached 18.1% in Q4 2025, up from 13.1% a year earlier, driven by the high-margin ES8's share of the product mix. The model accounted for 32% of NIO's record 124,807 deliveries in Q4.

To sustain momentum heading into Q1, NIO rolled out a 10,000 CNY (c. $1,500) limited-time purchase tax subsidy and introduced a new Nebula Red paint option in March. The company has guided for total first-quarter 2026 deliveries of 80,000 to 83,000 units, representing 90% to 97% year-on-year growth, implying March deliveries of 32,000 to 35,000 vehicles.

NIO co-founder and president Qin Lihong noted that order momentum for the ES8 recovered strongly after the Chinese New Year break, which ran from February 15 to 23. The vehicle's delivery wait time has compressed from 24 to 26 weeks at launch to roughly three to four weeks in early March 2026, reflecting both ramp-up at NIO's third factory in Hefei and thinning backlog.

The next test of NIO's premium positioning arrives quickly. The ES9 flagship SUV — targeting the above-500,000 CNY segment — is scheduled for a technology unveiling on April 9 and first deliveries on June 1. Whether the ES8 can hold its commanding gap in China's large SUV market once the ES9 begins competing for the same premium buyer will say much about how durable NIO's momentum turns out to be.
